Professional Development

Leadership development

At Mater, leadership is considered fundamental to every role, and critical to our ability to provide exceptional services to our patients and community. Your professional career at Mater is underpinned by a leadership framework that is firmly grounded in our purpose and identity as an organisation and as a health care provider. Leadership development at Mater spans all clinical and support functions and can support you to stretch your own capability and explore your potential.

Since its inception in 2006, the Mater Leadership Centre has received national and international recognition for its two core programs, the Mater Leaders Program, and the Mater Managers Program. Through these programs and others, which represent Mater's long term commitments to excellence in leadership development for all, the spirit of connecting leaders to each other, to our purpose, and to our people is brought to life. Whatever the next step in your professional journey, the Mater can support you to take it.

Clinical development

Mater Education is Mater's on-site clinical learning hub and provides a collaborative and integrated point of interprofessional teaching and learning activities across Mater and beyond.

As a Registered Training Organisation, Mater Education independently delivers a range of health qualifications from Certificate to Diploma level in areas such as nursing, pathology, dietetics and nutrition assistance, business and project management. Mater Education also provides on-site professional development to meet annual registration requirements and supports both postgraduate and undergraduate student clinical training across a range of health disciplines.

Mater Education has a number of designated simulated learning environments across its South Brisbane campus, including mobile simulation units and a purpose built simulation centre MEPIC (Mater Education Practice Improvement Centre) combining both high and low fidelity suites with a focus on learner centred education for patient centred care. The centre is focused on an interprofessional approach in the design and delivery of clinical education programs both undergraduate and post graduate clinical training.

For the past 12 years Mater Education has convened Mater's annual National Leadership and Learning Conference, offering high quality programs attracting delegates from all over Australia. Another popular event hosted by Mater Education is Mater's Clinical Teaching and Learning Awards which recognise and acknowledge Mater staff that have provided outstanding commitment to teaching and learning across 10 categories, now in its seventh year.
