About the role
Mater Hospital Brisbane is seeking an experienced Nephrology Nurse to join our dedicated Kidney Health Service team in a permanent part-time (0.8 FTE) position. We’re looking for someone with a strong clinical foundation, effective coordination and communication skills, and a passion for patient and staff education.
This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in vascular access surveillance, maintenance and patient education. The Mater Kidney Health Service in South Brisbane offers specialist care to patients 16 years and over living with kidney disease. We are a tertiary level 5 kidney service who partnerships with Fresenius Medical Care to provide dialysis at our incentre acute dialysis unit and satellite unit.
Salary range: $66.86 - $72.59 per hour plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900 + access to many staff benefits!
What you’ll be doing
You will provide advanced clinical leadership across the Mater Kidney Health Service, supporting patients preparing for acute and chronic dialysis treatments, work up for renal transplantation whilst on dialysis working with the KHS CNC and CN.
Your responsibilities will also include:
- Deliver comprehensive patient assessment, education and preparation for dialysis with the CNC – CKD and CN KHS.
- Work collaboratively with nephrologists, vascular surgeons, multidisciplinary teams and Fresenius Kidney Care dialysis nurses to ensure integrated care delivery.
- Perform physical assessments (inspection, palpation and auscultation) and use ultrasound to monitor vascular access function and detect early signs of dysfunction such as stenosis or thrombosis.
- Competently cannulate access sites, including ultrasound-guided cannulation, with strong knowledge of access types, function and potential complications.
- Coordinate and manage the Vascular Access Surveillance Pathways, including permcath insertion, fistula/graft creation, access dysfunction requiring fistuloplasty or stent procedures, and routine access monitoring.
- Track and trend vascular access data, manage patient referrals, scheduling and follow-ups, and ensure timely workflow across the service.
- Coordinate interdisciplinary Vascular Case Conference meetings with nephrologists, vascular surgeons, sonographers and nursing teams.
About you
You are a committed and knowledgeable renal nursing professional with advanced clinical skills and a passion for improving patient pathways and outcomes.
You will bring:
- Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse with a Bachelor of Nursing.
- Minimum 3 years’ current clinical experience in renal dialysis/ nephrology nursing.
- Demonstrated experience delivering patient education and managing complex renal cases.
- Strong capability working within multidisciplinary teams to achieve patient-centred outcomes.
- High-level communication, interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Post-graduate qualifications in Nephrology Nursing (highly desirable).
