About the role

Mater Centre for Neurosciences currently has a rewarding opportunity for an enthusiastic Fellow, Spine Surgery to join the team in August 2021 in a full-time, fixed term capacity until February 2022.

The successful candidate will undergo the 6 month Fellowship with the Brisbane Clinical Neuroscience Centre at the Mater Centre for Neurosciences. The Fellowship will have a particular emphasis on minimal invasive spine surgery techniques. The Fellow will receive education, instruction and have opportunities for research in conventional open and minimally invasive surgery of the spine. In addition to surgical techniques, the Fellow will gain experience in the use of intra-operative imaging and image-guidance technologies and their application within the field of spinal surgery. The Fellowship is a competency based training program allowing scholars to develop their technical skills with optimum efficiency while developing other surgical qualities including a commitment to lifelong learning, research, teaching, ethics and professionalism.

Being a busy neurosurgical group practice, there is a significant volume of general neurosurgical cases in addition to the large amount of minimally invasive spinal surgery, and the successful applicant’s involvement in this general spinal and intracranial work is welcomed and encouraged.

The Mater Centre for Neurosciences at the Mater Hospital Brisbane offers state-of-the-art equipment and technology, and is located within a busy metropolitan tertiary hospital. The patient caseload is both insured (private) and non-insured (public), which offers the successful applicant exposure to a wide range of pathologies and presentations. In addition to providing the highest level of specialist care, there is a strong commitment to learning and teaching. There are research ties and collaborations with the University of Queensland and the Translational Research Institute.

There are 50 ward beds allocated to neurosurgical and spine patients not including intensive care. The Brisbane Clinical Neuroscience Centre is composed of 6 neurosurgeons, 3 neurologists and a Skull Base ENT surgeon. Participation in and development of research projects pertinent to minimally invasive spinal surgery is strongly supported and encouraged.

Salary range: $100-$120k AUD per annum

 

What you’ll be doing

The position is based primarily at the Mater Centre for Neurosciences. In addition to surgery the successful applicant may have opportunity to participate in outpatient clinics at various locations around regional QLD.

The successful applicant will be involved with a high-volume practice in neurosurgery and spine surgery, with the expectation of significant exposure to Minimally Invasive Techniques (MIS), Posterior and lateral

Lumbar Approaches and Fusion (TLIF/PLIF/LLIF), and Anterior Cervical (ACDF, TDR).

About you

You will possess the following:

  • Medical Degree registrable in QLD.
  • FRACS or overseas equivalent in Neurosurgery or Orthopaedics (spinal)

The Fellow will be expected to deal proficiently with the full range of in-patient (operative and ward care) management of spinal cases, under the supervision and direction of the senior staff.
