About the role
The Mater Mothers’ Hospital is seeking a talented generalist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist to work across its South Brisbane campus and the Flying O&G Service (FOG). This is a unique opportunity to work in a world-class maternity facility delivering tertiary-level maternity care and general gynaecology, as well as providing gynaecology services and on-call obstetric care for regional and remote areas of Queensland. We are specifically looking for specialist candidates who are able to work collaboratively with medical, midwifery, allied health, and non-clinician colleagues to help us deliver consistent, evidence-based, high-value healthcare.

Our world-class quaternary maternity facility is located in Brisbane’s South Bank precinct and is the largest facility of its kind in Australia. With a co-located Research Institute, a Centre for Research Excellence, clinical school and Harvard-affiliated simulation centre, Mater is recognised as a leader in maternity, neonatal and women’s health care. The Mater Mother’s Hospital is a 200-bed 79-cot dedicated women’s hospital servicing both public and privately funded patients, managing more than 10,000 births, 2,000 neonatal admissions and 850 intensive care admissions each year, plus at least 100 neonatal retrievals and 150 back transfers.
Situated adjacent to the Queensland Children’s Hospital, Mater provides highly specialised and complex care as a perinatal tertiary referral centre, and is the Queensland referral centre for cardiac and surgical babies. Mater offers Fellowships in Gynae-Oncology, advanced laparoscopy, MFM, healthcare simulation, and general O&G, has 18 accredited RANZCOG training posts, and currently is supporting 4 O&G PhD candidates. The health service provides innovative models of preconception, antenatal, perinatal and postnatal care, as well as comprehensive general gynaecological services and sub-specialty areas of practice, including gynaecological oncology, endoscopic surgery, maternal-fetal-medicine, and gynaecological and perinatal pathology.
What you'll be doing
The role will comprise up to 16 week-long gynaecology-focused rotations. During these weeks, the specialist will be based in Roma, South Western Queensland, and will fly on a daily basis to regional towns to undertake gynaecological consulting and elective gynaecological surgery. After hours they will provide an emergency on-call service to the same region, being available both for phone advice and flying call-outs. It is anticipated that the successful applicant will spend around 16 weeks of the year (approximately one week in every three) based in Roma. When not in Roma, work will occur at Mater South Brisbane, providing general O&G services in a consultant capacity.
The successful applicant will be expected to participate in the teaching of Registrars, residents and students. They will also be actively involved in measuring and improving healthcare service delivery through activities such as inter-disciplinary education, team-based and technical simulation, clinical audit, safety and quality activities and research.
You will also have current appropriate medical registration, recent experience in a Mothers’ facility and the desire to continue your career by seamlessly integrating to this friendly and professional team, built on mutual respect and the Mater Values. The successful applicant will be expected to participate in the teaching of Registrars, residents and students.
