About the role
The Mater Private Hospital Rockhampton is seeking applications for a motivated and experienced Registered Nurse to work within our CSSD unit in casual capacity.
The Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) is a critical support unit at Mater. Responsible for the decontamination, sterilisation, assembly, and distribution of surgical instruments, medical equipment, and sterile packs. CSSD plays a vital role in infection control and patient safety, ensuring that all reusable medical items are properly processed and safe for use in clinical settings.
Salary range: $41.73 - $53.53 (RN1) per hour + 25% casual loading + 11.5% superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900 + access to many staff benefits!
What you’ll be doing
Responsibilities of a Registered Nurse in relation to the CSSD may include:
- Ensuring proper handling of instruments post-procedure: responsible for the safe and correct transport of used instruments to the CSSD, following infection control protocols.
- Communicating equipment needs: coordinate with CSSD staff to request specific instruments or trays required for upcoming procedures, ensuring availability and readiness.
- Inspecting instrument sets before use: inspect sterilised packs for integrity, expiration dates, and completeness.
- Reporting issues: promptly report any issues with sterilised items (e.g., damaged packaging, missing instruments) to ensure patient safety and avoid procedural delays.
- Maintaining infection control: follow strict guidelines to maintain the sterility of instruments and environments, minimizing the risk of healthcare-associated infections.
- Documentation: Accurate documentation of instrument use, sterilisation records, and incident reporting is an essential part of RN responsibilities when working with or around CSSD processes.
While CSSD staff are specialists in sterilisation, RNs play an essential role in ensuring that sterile protocols are maintained throughout patient care and surgical procedures.
