About the role

Mater Hospital is seeking an experienced Optometrist for a permanent full time 38 hours per week opportunity within Ophthalmology Specialist Clinic. This role will be Monday – Friday day shifts. Initially based at South Brisbane this role will work across Ophthalmology Specialist Clinics at the Mater Hospitals South Brisbane & Springfield Campuses once MHS Specialist Clinics is operational.

The Ophthalmology Specialist Clinic forms part of the Ambulatory Care & Outpatient Service offering exceptional individualised care and is committed to enhancing the patient experience by providing education, information and support that is evidence based.

Salary range: $64.64 - $69.55 per hour plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900  + access to many staff benefits! 

What you’ll be doing

  • Deliver advanced optometric care (refraction, ocular health assessment, ocular imaging/diagnostics) with minimal supervision, independently managing complex caseloads
  • Conducts systematic assessments of patients using an outcome-based framework
  • Provide optometry services as part of ophthalmology clinics, including post‑operative follow‑up and review of patients
  • Provide high‑quality clinical information and technical input to support medical and nursing staff to assess, diagnose and plan treatment
  • Work collaboratively with ophthalmologists, orthoptists, nurses, and administrative staff to optimise clinic throughput and uphold service performance targets. Monitor workload demands, apply high‑level time‑management strategies, and proactively engage in service planning to support activity targets, waitlist management, and operational improvements
  • Provide high‑level clinical advice and education to colleagues, use advanced interpersonal skills to support person‑centred, culturally safe care and effective discharge to community providers

About you

  • Tertiary Optometry qualification and current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) in Optometry to practice in Queensland
  • Endorsement as qualified to administer, obtain, possess, prescribe, supply or use topical schedule 2, 3 or 4 medicines for the purposes of the practice of optometry
  • Demonstrated advanced level of knowledge, expertise and skill in Optometry
  • Demonstrated ability to provide specialised clinical advice to professional and operational supervisors regarding service delivery and improvement opportunities
  • Demonstrated ability to provide optometry clinical services of a complex nature, where established principles, procedures and methods require some expansion, adaptation or modification
  • Current membership of the Optometry Association of Australia (desirable)
