About the role

Catherine’s House is a world-class, perinatal, and infant mental health integrated model of care, providing both inpatient and outpatient services to public and private consumers. The mental health clinician will work across the inpatient mother-baby unit and the outpatient private day program.

This role will provide discipline specific assessments and interventions for inpatients throughout their hospital admission. Additionally, part of the role will involve delivering and developing therapeutic group content.

The inpatient unit is a state-wide unit that provides acute perinatal mental health assessment and treatment to mothers with significant mental illnesses who are co-admitted with their baby under one year old. There are 10 beds in total, with 2 beds having capacity to be a high dependency unit.

The outpatient private day program will provide a range of mental health interventions to families with mild to moderate mental illnesses, such as dialectical behavioural therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy.

Catherine’s House also has specialist consulting suites, with clinicians having the option to lease rooms on a sessional basis as a private practitioner.

This position will work closely with the wider multi-disciplinary team (including, Medical, Nursing and other Allied Health professionals) as well as other relevant stakeholders to provide expert clinical care, with a particular focus on perinatal mental health. It is an expectation that the successful applicant will be actively involved in research, education and continuous quality improvement and play a role in the development of mental health services across the continuum of care.

This position may be required to work across any Mater Mental Health Service when there is organisational need.

It is a condition of employment for this role that the employee is, and remains so for the course of their employment, vaccinated against preventable diseases

 

Salary range: $41.87 - $57.80 per hour plus 11.5% superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900  + access to many staff benefits! 

 

What you’ll be doing

The role of the Psychologist is to deliver a high level of clinical service to patients of Catherine’s House as a member of the multidisciplinary team.

The role involves but is not limited to –

  •  Provision of quality clinical practice to mother-baby dyads and their families and delivers evidence-based, group and individual interventions within the framework of Catherine’s House’ model of care.
  • Providing discipline specific treatment, care and assessments to consumers admitted to the inpatient unit of Catherine’s House, including group work.
  •  Practices in accordance with relevant legislation, Acts and agreements, workplace health and safety, equal employment opportunity and anti-discrimination practices

To provide perinatal and infant mental health assessment and treatment and ensures mothers, babies and families receive consistent coordinated care that addresses their psychological, emotional, and physical needs.

  • Provide advice and assistance in the development of effective interventions for consumers experiencing perinatal mental health conditions.
  • Provide ongoing assessment to monitor and review the effectiveness of intervention strategies implemented.
  • Ability to provide effective liaison with the wider inpatient team, various specialists and attends psychosocial meetings.
  • Maintains and enhances relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contributes to a network of referral options and information for consumers with perinatal and infant mental health concerns.
  • Facilitate access to mental health services for mothers and babies with perinatal and infant mental health needs or ensure other adequate follow up is arranged for their ongoing care upon discharge.
  • The delivery and development (when required) of therapeutic group content for outpatients who access the service
  • In conjunction with the multidisciplinary team, contribute to the integration and evaluation of strategic direction and priorities for quality improvement and research within Catherine’s House.
  •  Acts to enhance the professional development of self and others.
  •  Demonstrates active involvement in meeting the clinical unit's and organisational goals, including KPI’s.
  • Promote and contribute to a positive working environment and team culture.
  • Positively influences others to identify and act in accordance with clinical and organisational best practice.

 

About you

Essential-

  • General Registration via the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Recent experience of working within a mental health service or wider hospital system and being part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to provide skilled mental health clinical assessment and
  • interventions, preferably in an acute mental health inpatient setting.
  • Demonstrated clinical practice and application of clinical judgement in the provision of high
  • quality, evidence based, patient centred care, preferably within an acute mental health
  • inpatient setting.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work co-operatively with profession and multi-disciplinary teams,
  • patients and carers to achieve optimal outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability or ability to rapidly acquire skills to identify, develop and participate in quality and service improvement activities that improve clinical services and patient outcomes

Desirable-

  • Eligibility for accreditation or current Board approved Supervisor status with the Psychology
  • Board of Australia or actively working towards same
  • Psychology Board of Australia Area of Practice Endorsement in Clinical or Educational and
  • Developmental Psychology or working towards same
  • Recent experience within an acute mental health inpatient unit or in perinatal mental health
