About the role
Mater Health is looking for up to 5 Junior Registrar/Principal House Officer (PHO) to join the team at the new Mater Hospital Springfield Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on a full-time basis in 2026. Successful applicants will work principally at the new Mater Hospital Springfield ICU with access to training and support from the Mater Hospital Brisbane ICU.
The Junior Registrar/Principal House Officer (PHO) reports to the Deputy Director of Intensive Care, Mater Hospital Springfield who in turn reports to the Director of Intensive Care Services, Mater Health. For daily patient care, the Junior Reg/PHO is under the direction and supervision of the Intensivist on duty.
Mater Hospital Springfield, set to open from early 2026, is a contemporary nine-storey facility with an Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, General Surgical, Medical, Paediatric and Maternity units. It is co-located with the Mater Private Hospital Springfield and the facilities have in total 233 inpatient beds. The Mater Hospital Springfield ICU is a 9-bed unit that will be capable of providing vital organ support including mechanical ventilation, non-invasive ventilation, inotropic/vasopressor support and renal replacement therapy for critically ill patients and patients undergoing major elective procedures.
The Mater Intensive Care Services provide integrated public and private critical care service across two (soon to be three) ICUs. We have a friendly and skilled team that excels in caring for a variety of patient groups including complex surgical patients, patients with neurosurgical and neurological conditions, patients with life-threatening medical conditions, critically ill obstetric patients and critically ill oncology/haematology patients. The two units at our South Brisbane Campus are currently accredited for unrestricted (C24) advanced ICU training as well as neurosurgical critical care training by the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM).
Salary range: $129,949 - $150,240 per annum plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900 + access to many staff benefits!
What you’ll be doing
Under the supervision of the senior medical staff, to undertake clinical and administrative responsibility appropriate to level of experience as follows:
- Overall management of patients in Intensive Care including but not limited to formulate plans of management and co-ordinate appropriate consultation with other specialities.
- Selection and arrangement of appropriate investigations.
- Communicate effectively with patients and their relatives.
- Respond to requests throughout the hospital for emergency resuscitation and/or assessment as part of the hospital medical emergency and code blue team
- Ensure appropriate documentation in the patient clinical record. This includes an admission note, daily ward round note, procedural documentation and a discharge summary at the time the patient leaves the unit.
- Maintain appropriate liaison with nursing staff and allied health personnel.
- Implement decisions on patient care under the direction of senior medical staff.
- Provide medico-legal reports as required.
- Develop improved proficiency in the theoretical and clinical aspects of intensive care medicine.
- Refine the knowledge of social and ethical behaviour required of a clinician in intensive care.
- Assist in the teaching of other junior medical staff, medical students and other health professionals
- Participate in audit and quality improvement activities.
- Serve as a role model for other junior medical staff and medical students with professional attitude and good behaviour.
- The appointee will be required to participate in rostered overtime, late shifts, weekends and public holidays.
- Comply with and utilise procedures, policies, regulations and standards which impact upon the position, including contemporary human resource management requirements and practices, such as workplace health and safety, equal employment opportunity and anti-discrimination policies.
About you
Qualifications
Essential
You will have a Medical Degree(s): MBBS, MD or equivalent and be eligible for at least a provisional registration with AHPRA. Ideally you will also meet the below criteria:
- Completion of the BASIC course or equivalent is desirable
- Experience in intensive care, anaesthesia or emergency medicine at junior registrar or PHO level is highly desirable. Experience as resident in the above specialties acceptable.
