Mater Mothers’ Hospital has an exciting opportunity available for a Staff Specialist Neonatologist to join the Neonatology team in the Mater Neonatal Critical Care Unit. This is a maximum-term (locum) position, part-time at 20 hours per week until 2 November 2025.

Our world-class quaternary maternity facility is located in Brisbane’s South Bank precinct, and is the largest facility of its kind in Australia. With a co-located research institute, clinical school and Harvard-affiliated simulation centre, Mater is recognised as a leader in maternity, neonatal and women’s health care. The Mater Mother’s Hospitals NCCU is a 79-cot level 6 quaternary referral unit servicing both public and private funded patients, managing more 1800 to 2000 neonatal admissions and 850 intensive care admissions each year, plus at least 100 neonatal retrievals and 150 back transfers. 

The Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU) consists of 47 intensive care cots and 32 special care cots. All facets of neonatal/perinatal care are provided, including care of infants with extreme prematurity, unwell term infants, infants requiring neonatal surgery and those with congenital heart disease, as well as multidisciplinary follow up clinics.   Mater Mother’s Hospital, South Brisbane is a regional referral centre for fetal abnormalities. Situated adjacent to the Queensland Children’s Hospital, Mater provides highly specialised and complex care as a perinatal tertiary referral centre, the south-east and central Queensland surgical referral centre, and the Queensland cardiac referral centre. 

There is the opportunity for involvement in neonatal retrieval through NeoRESQ providing clinical advice and transport coordination for babies from central and southern Queensland as well as northern New South Wales.

This position provides an exciting opportunity to join a multidisciplinary team of skilled and experienced neonatal researchers, to build on current research and to facilitate and initiate new neonatal research in a supportive and innovative environment.

Salary: Commensurate with experience plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900  + access to many staff benefits!  

About you

For this role, we are seeking an individual who is motivated by and experienced in all facets of clinical neonatal/perinatal medicine, including specialist experience in a tertiary perinatal centre as well as experience in the care of infants with cardiac and surgical conditions.  Suitable applicants will have experience in education, teaching and supervision, research and quality improvement, as well as experience in the aspects of clinical governance expected for a staff specialist. Suitable applicants will have:

  • Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Medical Specialist within the field of Paediatrics and Child Health
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) in Neonatal/ Perinatal Medicine (or equivalent)

Preferred qualities:

  • Previous experience as a neonatologist caring for babies with surgical conditions and congenital heart disease
  • Experience and/or qualifications in research, education, clinical governance and/or quality improvement
