About the role

Mater Mothers’ Hospital is seeking an experienced Clinical Midwifery Specialist to join our Inpatient Services team in South Brisbane on a part-time, permanent basis, working 10 hours per week.

As a Clinical Midwife Specialist, you will provide expert clinical leadership, working alongside the Midwifery Unit Manager (MUM) to promote contemporary midwifery practice through research, education, and continuous safety and quality improvements. You will play a key role in supporting the development of midwifery services across inpatient clinical units, with a strong focus on managing care for high-risk patients and mentoring junior staff.

Salary range: $66.85 - $72.58 per hour plus 12% superannuation andaccess to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900  +access to many staff benefits!

What you’ll be doing

In this role, you’ll take the lead in shaping safe, high-quality midwifery care, guiding both patients and colleagues through complex and high-risk situations. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering high standards of clinical practice, with a focus on complex care planning and supervision for high-risk patients.
  • Leading and supporting the multidisciplinary team in the management of patient deterioration, including high-risk pregnancies and critical events.
  • Providing expert midwifery advice, education, and mentoring to junior and developing staff.
  • Promoting effective communication and clinical problem solving to enhance patient care and team collaboration.
  • Driving continuous improvement activities, contributing to research, and sharing findings to strengthen evidence-based care.
  • Acting as a role model and values-based leader, supporting the professional growth and development of others.

About you

You’re an experienced and compassionate midwife who thrives in a leadership role, bringing both clinical expertise and a commitment to mentoring others.

Essential qualifications & experience

  • Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a tertiary maternity service.
  • Extensive experience providing midwifery care to high-risk patients and offering expert clinical advice.
  • Proven leadership experience in a complex hospital environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence and collaborate across teams.

Desired qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualifications in critical care or emergency nursing, or working towards completion.
  • Postgraduate qualifications in leadership, or working towards completion.
