About the role

The Department of Anaesthesia at Mater Health Services is seeking several Provisional Fellows to join them in February 2027, on maximum term contract for either 6 or 12 months.

The Mater Hospital Brisbane provides exposure to a broad range of tertiary Anaesthesia services. In addition to most major surgical subspecialties, Mater Anaesthetists support a growing number of minimally invasive and robotic procedures, particularly across hepatobiliary, colorectal and gynaecology surgery. Anaesthetic services are also provided for vascular procedures performed in the Angiography Suite.

Mater Mothers’ Hospital is a leading women’s health facility and Queensland’s largest maternity provider, delivering more than 11,000 babies each year. The service is a major referral centre for complex obstetric and Maternal–Fetal Medicine cases, and the largest provider of publicly funded gynaecology services in the state.

What you’ll be doing

From 2027, the Department will offer a dedicated Obstetric Anaesthesia Provisional Fellowship, alongside other General Provisional Fellowship positions.

All Provisional Fellows will receive a supported transition to independent consultant-level practice, gaining experience across obstetrics (elective and emergency) and a range of adult surgical subspecialties.

All fellows will have opportunities to:

  • Independently manage elective surgery lists, as well as have teaching lists with 1:1 consultant supervision
  • Provide bedside and formal teaching of junior staff
  • Participate in continuing medical education activities
  • Participate in the after-hours on-call roster and the Duty Anaesthetist role, with support from senior staff
  • Contribute to management, research, audit and quality improvement initiatives

The Obstetric Anaesthesia Provisional Fellowship offers additional focused exposure to:

  • Antenatal assessment and management of high-risk patients through multidisciplinary meetings
  • Perinatal management of complex pregnancies, including placenta accreta spectrum disorders, cardiac disease in pregnancy and pre-eclampsia
  • Intra-uterine fetal surgery
  • Observership opportunities in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or Maternal–Fetal Medicine Unit

About you

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • MBBS or equivalent level medical qualification that is recognised by the Medical board of Australia
  • Current registration with/or eligible for registration with the Medical board of Australia through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a medical practitioner
  • Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) Final examination complete at the commencement of employment (or equivalent) as a minimum
  • At least 4 years anaesthesia training at the commencement of employment
  • A demonstrated interest and capability in providing high quality care to Obstetric patients
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated achievements in research, audit and quality improvement.
  • A commitment to supervising and educating junior medical and non-medical staff
  • A high level of professionalism, integrity and ethical practice
