About the role
Mater Private Hospital Bundaberg is seeking a dedicated and experienced Bed Manager to join our team. This is a permanent, full‑time position (38 hours per week) offering an exciting opportunity to provide strong clinical leadership, operational oversight and people management throughout out hospital.
The Bed and Staffing Manager is a pivotal leadership role within the Hospital, responsible for the efficient and effective management of bed utilisation and casual staffing recruitment and retention. Working closely with the Management and Executive teams, this role plays a critical part in influencing patient flow, optimising length of stay, and ensuring staffing resources align with clinical demand and the Hospital’s strategic objectives.
Mater Bundaberg is a 59‑bed private hospital providing high‑quality surgical, medical, and rehabilitation services. The hospital includes dedicated surgical and medical/rehabilitation wards, supporting patients across the acute and sub‑acute continuum of care with a strong focus on recovery and patient‑centred outcomes. The Surgical Ward manages a broad caseload including orthopaedics, gynaecology, general surgery, and ENT, while the Medical and Rehabilitation Ward delivers comprehensive medical and recovery‑focused care. Our Perioperative Department features three operating theatres and one procedure room, performing more than 4,400 procedures annually across specialties such as general surgery, orthopaedics, gynaecology, urology, ophthalmology, reconstructive plastics, and respiratory procedures.
Salary range: $66.85 - $72.58 per hour plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900 + access to many staff benefits!
What you’ll be doing
- Leading and overseeing hospital-wide bed utilisation to support efficient patient flow and service delivery
- Managing casual staffing recruitment, allocation, retention, and workforce planning to meet clinical demands
- Collaborating with Nursing Unit Managers, Support Services, After Hours Coordinators, Human Resources and Executive teams to respond to unexpected vacancies and operational pressures
- Ensuring all staffing and bed management practices align with relevant legislation, clinical standards, accreditation requirements and organisational policies
- Supporting financial sustainability through effective resource allocation, cost monitoring and adherence to patient care budgets
- Contributing to strategic and operational planning initiatives, quality improvement activities and accreditation readiness
- Providing strong people leadership, including recruitment, performance management, professional development, succession planning and workforce engagement
- Maintaining a safe workplace culture that promotes zero harm for staff and zero preventable harm for patients
- Building strong, collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders to enhance service provision and consumer outcomes
About you
You are a confident and experienced clinical leader who brings a strategic mindset, strong operational acumen, and a passion for delivering exceptional patient-centred care. You thrive in fast-paced environments and are skilled at balancing clinical priorities, workforce demands, and financial accountability.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse
- Postgraduate qualifications in management or a related discipline (desirable)
- Minimum of 5 years’ recent experience in a senior clinical management role
- Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and engage multidisciplinary clinical teams
- Strong experience in workforce planning, staffing models, and bed management
- Proven understanding of private health sector funding models
- Well-developed leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills
- High level of digital and computer literacy
- A commitment to professional development, accountability, and upholding organisational values and standards
