Salary range: $129,394 - $133,248 per annum plus superannuation andaccess to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900  +access to many staff benefits!

About the role

Reporting through Mater’s Corporate Affairs and Growth portfolio, the Manager, Business Development will work closely with hospital executives, General Managers, medical leaders, clinical teams, medical administration and operational teams to support targeted VMO recruitment and sustainable clinical growth.

You will play a key role in identifying doctors who can support growth across Mater’s private hospitals, particularly in medical and surgical specialties where there is service demand, succession risk, market opportunity or capacity to grow theatre and procedural activity.

The role will support the full recruitment and engagement pathway, from identifying and approaching prospective doctors, through to supporting recruitment conversations, credentialing, onboarding, engagement and integration into Mater services.

Key responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Lead targeted recruitment activity for Visiting Medical Officers across medical and surgical specialties.
  • Identify priority doctors and specialist groups aligned to Mater’s hospital growth, service expansion and succession needs.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with prospective VMOs, existing specialists, medical groups, practice managers, recruiters and other medical workforce stakeholders.
  • Support domestic and international doctor recruitment activity, including specialist attraction, relocation considerations, registration pathways, onboarding requirements and integration into private hospital practice.
  • Work with hospital executives, General Managers, Medical Directors and Heads of Department to understand service gaps, workforce risks and clinical growth opportunities.
  • Support the development and management of specialist recruitment pipelines across Mater’s private hospital network.
  • Coordinate recruitment activity across medical administration, credentialing, clinical leaders, marketing, GP engagement and operational teams.
  • Support doctor onboarding and integration to ensure new VMOs are set up for success at Mater.
  • Use market intelligence, referral trends, theatre utilisation, procedural demand and service data to inform recruitment priorities.
  • Contribute to business cases, growth plans and service development opportunities linked to medical workforce capability.
  • Monitor recruitment activity, pipeline progress and outcomes, and report regularly to senior leadership.

About you

You may currently be working in medical recruitment, executive recruitment, healthcare recruitment, private hospital business development, specialist engagement, medical workforce planning or a related healthcare growth role.

You will bring strong relationship-building skills, commercial judgement, discipline in follow-up, and the confidence to engage with senior doctors, hospital executives and clinical leaders.

You will also bring:

  • Experience attracting, recruiting or engaging doctors, specialists, consultants, VMOs or senior clinical professionals.
  • Strong understanding of medical and surgical specialist recruitment, ideally in a private hospital or specialist healthcare setting.
  • Experience supporting domestic or international doctor recruitment.
  • Ability to identify and develop specialist recruitment opportunities based on service demand, theatre utilisation, referral pathways, market gaps and succession planning.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build trust and credibility with doctors and senior healthcare leaders.
  • Commercial and analytical capability, including the ability to interpret market information, activity data and service growth opportunities.
  • Strong project management skills, including pipeline management, planning, reporting and delivery against recruitment priorities.
  • Understanding of private hospital operations, credentialing, onboarding, medical engagement and specialist practice environments.
  • Ability to influence without direct authority and work across complex multidisciplinary teams.
  • A practical, outcomes-focused approach and a track record of delivering growth, recruitment or workforce outcomes in a competitive healthcare environment.
