What you’ll be doing
The Research Officer is expected to critically evaluate data and literature, design and perform experiments in the Glial Neurobiology group. You will work with the principal investigator and Research Group Leader, Dr Carlie Cullen, her team, local MR / UQ and national researchers to ultimately understand how glial cells contribute to brain circuit function. A particular focus of the team is understanding how atypical myelination of the developing brain or impaired myelin plasticity throughout life contributes to neurodevelopmental disorders, neuropsychiatric disease and other neurological conditions, such as multiple sclerosis.
The primary focus of this position will be on the generation and evaluation of transgenic mouse models to investigate the role of oligodendrocyte lineage cells during neural network formation and/or neurodegenerative disease. The Research Officer will also contribute broadly to other Projects in the lab and be supported to develop new research directions and gain competitiveness for national grant and fellowship applications.
About you
The successful candidate will possess the following knowledge, experience and attributes:
- PhD submitted, or recently conferred in Neuroscience or related field
- Knowledge of the research environment, ethical and compliance considerations, as well as exceptional record keeping and scientific rigor.
- Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to contribute to the research outcomes as part of an effective team, while independently establishing work priorities
- Strong academic track record (eg. publications, preprints, conference presentations) and technical laboratory skills in the broad area of neuroscience
- Experience with using animal models, immunohistochemistry, microscopy, data analysis and interpretation. Experience working with transgenic mice and/or demyelination models will be advantageous.
- Appropriate written communication skills and digital literacy including the use of Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, statistical analysis software, Endnote referencing tool, and NCBI Resources including PubMed.
- Demonstrated commitment to research integrity, reproducibility, scientific rigour, and the responsible conduct of animal and biomedical research.
