About the role

Mater Mother’s Hospital is a premier women’s health facility and Queensland’s largest maternity care provider.  We are excited to be able to offer a unique 12-month Advanced Training position with a six-month focus in Gynaecology-Oncology, commencing February 2025.  The successful candidate will have the opportunity to enhance their skills in complex oncological and benign gynaecological surgery, as well as ample exposure to high-risk obstetrics.

Salary: Commensurate with experience plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900

What you’ll be doing

Mater Mother’s Hospital is seeking a talented and enthusiastic Level 5 or 6 Registrar who is looking to enhance their open and laparoscopic skills in pelvic surgery.  This position has been established in response to the increasing expectations of the generalist O&G to have a high level of surgical skills and limited opportunities for advanced trainees to develop these skills outside of subspecialty training pathways.

You will be integrated into a team that sees 80 to 100 new or suspected cancer referrals a month and executes a robust Multidisciplinary Tumour Board.  As part of the Gynaecology Oncology team the successful candidate will receive exposure to complex pelvic pathology and surgery as well as highly specialised surgical interventions, including pelvic exenteration and heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) at cytoreductive surgery.   This role also allows for consolidation and growth of expertise in high-risk obstetrics in the antenatal and intrapartum setting, while working in Australia’s largest maternity hospital.

The AT Gynaecology-Oncology role will include a minimum of 20-weeks working in the Mater Gynaecological Oncology service, with access to approximately 2 all-day operating lists per week and monthly robotic lists.  Active involvement in the weekly MDT (oncology, radiology, pathology) case discussion meetings and ample opportunity for research.  The remainder of training will be spent in general gynaecology and tertiary level obstetrics care.  There will also be an opportunity for interested registrars to participate in the Mater Flying O&G Service, comprising week-long gynaecology-focussed rotations to rural and regional Queensland.  Mater Mothers Hospitals have a dynamic education, audit and research program and the successful applicant will be expected to be actively involved in these activities.

About you

This Advanced Training Post would ideally suit a Senior Registrar intending to pursue a career in general obstetrics and gynaecology and is specifically targeted at Level 5/6 trainees. The role would also provide an excellent foundation for those considering subspecialising in gynaecology oncology.  The successful applicant may wish to undertake the Generalist Gynaecology ATM and Generalist Obstetric ATM or the Essential Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Skills ATM. It may be possible to undertake the colposcopy ATM and/or Hysteroscopy/Laparoscopy ATM.

Trainees who have completed their core training requirements are encouraged to apply.

For exceptional candidates there may be an option of a 2 year position to experience a selection of our advanced training and senior registrar roles as part of our commitment to help to develop Australia’s best Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
