Mater Pathology is the oldest pathology service in the Brisbane and surrounding areas. Initially established and supervised by the Sisters of Mercy in 1919, Mater Pathology has grown into a multi-faceted and technologically advanced laboratory service serving patients, doctors and hospitals.  The service invests all profits back into patient care and is part of Mater Misericordia Limited.

The Mater Stem Cell Transplant Laboratory operates from within Mater Pathology and provides NATA accredited laboratory processing, cryostorage, release and reinfusion services of autologous hematopoietic progenitor cells  [HPC(A)] collected via apheresis. The laboratory supports direct patient care for both public and private patients.

This is a permanent, part-time position - 19 hours per week.

Salary range: $43.68 - $60.43 (HP 3) per hour + 11.5% superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900  + access to many staff benefits! 

The ideal candidate will possess a high-level scientific knowledge, skills and an appropriate level of experience to provide operational support for routine and complex cellular therapy operations within the Stem Cell Transplant Laboratory and participate in the daily workflow of the rostered work area team. This role is part of a highly motivated team that delivers care to patients at Mater facilities and Greenslopes Private Hospital.

 The position of Laboratory Scientist will:

  • Work alongside the Clinical Scientist, Stem Cell Transplant Laboratory to carry out the operational duties required to maintain a high-quality stem cell transplant laboratory service in accordance with regulatory requirements and an established quality management system.
  • Maintain a professional and patient centric interface between the laboratory operations, clinical services, and referrers.
  • Provide attention to detail with respect to cell processing, record keeping, and reporting.
  • Apply sound scientific knowledge and professional judgment to high-level risk assessment, problem-solving and decision making.
  • Manage work priorities to effectively meet critical clinical requirements.
  • Operate, maintain, and manage equipment and resources to optimise cellular product quality and integrity.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities.
  • Maintain a secure and clean facility.
  • Understand contingency and disaster management measures and have the capacity to refer to and/or implement these when required.
  • Participate in an on call roster.

Skills & Experience

  • A tertiary qualification in science (a biological major) or a related field.
  • Prior experience in a cellular therapy laboratory or GMP manufacturing is desirable.
  • Haematology/Transfusion medicine background is desirable.
  • Previous experience working within a quality management framework and an understanding of the regulatory framework under which a cellular therapy laboratory is required to operate within Australia e.g. NPAAC, NATA, TGA, FACT.
  • Aseptic technique.
  • Equipment management.
  • Effective and professional communication skills.

Note: Program specific GMP and operational training will be provided as part of the onboarding process.
