About the role

Mater Language Services are looking for a passionate Vietnamese Interpreter to join the Language Services team on a 6 month Maximum Term basis working 15.2 hours per week.

Provision of high-quality interpreting of critical medical information in direct service to physicians and/or other health care providers who are seeing patients who have limited proficiency in English.

Salary range: $46.96 - $51.79 per hour plus 12% superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900  + access to many staff benefits! 

What you’ll be doing

  • Provide accurate and confidential interpreting services in NAATI certified/accredited languages to support effective communication between patients and healthcare providers.
  • Deliver interpreting services across a wide range of healthcare settings, including individual consultations, multidisciplinary meetings, family discussions, group education sessions, and diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.
  • Facilitate communication between patients with limited English proficiency and healthcare professionals using appropriate interpreting modes such as dialogue interpreting, consecutive, simultaneous, chuchotage (whispered interpreting), and sight translation, ensuring accurate and contextually appropriate interpretation.
  • Translate written health-related materials including patient instructions, discharge summaries, consent forms, and educational brochures to ensure patients and families understand medical information and treatment plans.
  • Provide culturally relevant context and support to healthcare professionals regarding patient care where appropriate, without engaging in stereotyping or making assumptions about cultural practices.
  • Accurately document all daily interpreting activities in prescribed electronic information systems on a regular basis, demonstrating sound knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and the ability to quickly adopt and use in-house software tools.
  • Maintain current NAATI credentials and ensure certification or accreditation is renewed as required.
  • Actively participate in educational programs, interpreter training courses, peer support activities, and all mandatory training prescribed by Mater Health Services to maintain high standards of service delivery.

About you

  • NAATI Certification or Accreditation with minimum 5 years recent medical interpreting experience 
  • Advanced Interpreting Skills: Proficiency in dialogue, consecutive, simultaneous, whispered (chuchotage), and sight translation modes across diverse healthcare settings.
  • Medical and Cultural Knowledge: Sound understanding of medical terminology, procedures, and culturally responsive communication practices without stereotyping.
  • Written Translation Abilities: Capability to accurately translate health-related documents, including consent forms, discharge summaries, and patient education materials.
