About the role

Mater Mothers’ Hospital’s Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU) is seeking a Neonatal Fellow/ Senior Registrar with neonatal experience to join the team on a maximum-term, full-time basis.

Mater Mothers’ Hospital (MMH), South Brisbane, is Australia’s largest maternity hospital, caring for over 10,000 births each year. The Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU) is one of the largest and most advanced neonatal units in the country — a combined tertiary perinatal NICU that also delivers complex surgical and subspecialty neonatal care often provided in children’s hospitals. Each year, nearly 2,000 babies from across Queensland and Northern New South Wales receive care in the NCCU, which comprises 42 intensive care cots and 34 special care cots.

Located adjacent to the Queensland Children’s Hospital (QCH), Mater’s South Brisbane campus benefits from a close and collaborative relationship with QCH, positioning the NCCU as a quaternary referral centre for babies requiring cardiac or surgical care or other subspecialty input.

Salary range: Commensurate with experience per hour plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900  + access to many staff benefits! 

What you’ll be doing

Depending on neonatal experience, you will be working in the Neonatal Fellow / Neonatal Registrar roster, with the opportunity to step up in as skills and experience are acquired.

Neonatal Fellow is a key clinical and leadership role within Mater Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU). You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team in the provision of family-centred developmental care to babies in the Neonatal Critical Care Unit as well as to babies in other areas of the organisation, including in an outpatient setting.

You will:

  • Liaise with and assist the Director of Neonatology with the provision of comprehensive neonatal services to the Mater Mothers' Hospital
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team in the provision of family-centred developmental care to babies in the Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU) as well as to babies in other areas of the organisation, including in an outpatient setting
  • Practice evidence-based neonatology under the supervision of a neonatologist
  • Participate in ward rounds, attend neonatal outpatient clinics and attend high risk deliveries and emergencies in theatre, birthing or postnatal floors
  • Maintain adequate medical records on all patients
  • Supervise registrars and resident medical officers who work for the Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU)
  • Provide education, clinical teaching and mentoring for staff within Mater Health, including rotating medical officers from Queensland Children’s Hospital (QCH)
  • Liaise and collaborate with other clinical teams across Queensland, including with teams from QCH, other neonatal intensive care units and special care nursery services
  • Utilise and ensure compliance with contemporary human resource management practice and principles including workplace health and safety, equal employment opportunity and anti-discrimination requirements

About you

You’re a dedicated and capable medical practitioner with a strong commitment to delivering evidence-based, family-centred neonatal care. You bring clinical expertise, sound judgement, and a collaborative approach to supporting newborns and their families within a multidisciplinary environment.

You will bring:

  • Registration as a medical practitioner without conditions, with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Undertaking or completed fellowship training in neonatal perinatal medicine or general paediatrics with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or equivalent
  • Experience in providing evidence-based family-centred neonatal care
  • Tertiary level registrar experience in perinatal, cardiac and surgical neonatology is desired
  • Up to date knowledge of all aspects of neonatal perinatal medicine, including the use of equipment used in neonatal intensive care
  • Skills in performing procedures commonly used in neonatal intensive care
  • Ability to work harmoniously within a team and communicate effectively at all levels
  • Ability to evaluate situations and make objective judgements and decisions
  • Clinical leadership qualities
