Mater Pharmacy is seeking applications for Senior Pharmacists to join us in a permanent full-time or part-time role. Based predominantly at our Mater Hospital Springfield campus, these roles will be part of a landmark moment in Queensland healthcare at Mater Hospital Springfield — opening early 2026. As Mater’s first new public hospital in over 60 years, this state of the art facility will meet the needs of the growing Greater Springfield region. With 174 public beds, ICU, maternity, emergency and surgical services, it’s set to care for over 200,000 patients annually.
Mater Pharmacy will provide a clinical service to all inpatient areas and outpatient clinics, as well as serving the local community’s health needs so this represents a fantastic opportunity to make a positive contribution to the health and wellbeing of this community and to contribute to a strong, unified, inter-professional Clinical Services team at Mater.
Salary range: $64.64 - $69.55 per hour (HP4) plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900 + access to many staff benefits!
What you’ll be doing
As a Senior Pharmacist, you will deliver a high standard of pharmacy service across Mater Health, providing expert clinical advice, ensuring the safe and effective use of medicines, and supporting the ongoing development of pharmacy practice. You will take a leadership role in quality improvement, education, and mentoring, while contributing to service planning and multidisciplinary collaboration to optimise patient outcomes.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing advanced clinical pharmacy services to optimise safe, effective, and appropriate medication use in one or many clinical areas
- Applying expert clinical judgement in managing complex patient cases and supporting multidisciplinary teams
- Providing medication related information, advice and support to the multidisciplinary team
- Leading and contributing to quality improvement initiatives, protocols, and policy development
- Supporting service planning, evaluation, and reporting in collaboration with Pharmacy leadership
- Providing mentoring, supervision and professional support to pharmacists, technicians, and students
- Promoting medication safety and best practice through education, audit, and governance activities such as contributing to the development of relevant policies, procedures and work instructions
- Ensuring compliance with legislation, clinical governance frameworks and Mater policies
- Representing Pharmacy on relevant committees, working groups, and interdepartmental forums
This role will be based primarily at our Springfield campus where the following clinical services will be offered:
- Critical Care areas including Intensive Care Unit and Emergency
- Maternity and Special Care Nursery
- Paediatric Emergency and Inpatient ward
- General medical, surgical and rehabilitation inpatient wards
As well as the Springfield team, you will have the opportunity to be trained at and rotate to relevant areas of our tertiary referral hospitals at the South Brisbane campus which also have Coronary Care Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care, inpatient Cancer Care, Neurosciences and various other general specialities. You will also engage with and be supported by all other Mater Pharmacy teams including Inventory Management, Clinical Trials, Medicines Information, Community Services and the Production Unit.
Our service to the hospitals is required 365 days per year so the role will include a share of evening, public holiday and weekend shifts as well as provision of an on-call service to all our facilities on a rostered basis.
About you
We are seeking experienced pharmacists with advanced clinical and operational expertise, driven by a passion for delivering safe, effective, and person-centred care. You combine sound clinical judgement with strong leadership and mentoring skills, enabling you to support colleagues, optimise medication use, and contribute to system-wide improvement. You are committed to excellence, collaboration, and ongoing professional growth, and you bring a proactive approach to advancing medication safety and service quality across the Mater Health network.
To be considered for this role you will have:
- Bachelor of Pharmacy and current registration as a Pharmacist with AHPRA (without restrictions)
- Significant experience in hospital or clinical pharmacy, with advanced clinical knowledge and/or operational capability
- Demonstrated ability to apply high-level clinical reasoning and evidence-based decision-making in complex cases
- Proven leadership skills, including the ability to mentor, coach and support junior pharmacists and technicians
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
- Strong understanding of medication safety, regulatory compliance and quality improvement processes
- Ability to manage competing priorities, drive efficiency and contribute to service development
- The flexibility to work a share of all shifts including evenings, weekends, public holidays and on-call on a rostered basis
Desirable qualifications:
- Postgraduate qualifications in clinical pharmacy, or relevant SHPA/AdPha specialty training courses
- ANZCAP recognition at registrar or consultant level in relevant specialty areas
