Mater Hospital Springfield is seeking applications for multiple Scientific Assistant to join us in a permanent, full-time and part time roles. Based at our Springfield campus, these roles will be part of a landmark moment in Queensland healthcare at Mater Hospital Springfield — opening early 2026. As Mater’s first new public hospital in over 60 years, this state of the art facility will meet the needs of the growing Greater Springfield region. With 174 public beds, ICU, maternity, emergency and surgical services, it’s set to care for over 200,000 patients annually.

The Scientific Assistant role at Mater Pathology involves processing clinical specimens and preparing them for examination in adherence to laboratory protocols and quality standards. This position requires working independently and collaboratively within a team to contribute to continuous quality improvement and ensure positive patient outcomes. The role operates on a 24-hour basis, with potential shift work to meet operational needs.

Salary range: $34.87 - $36.55 per hour plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900  + access to many staff benefits! 

What you’ll be doing

  • Meticulously identify specimens and ensure accurate data transfer throughout handling process
  • Adhere to quality system procedures and maintain occupational health and safety standards
  • Mentor students and new employees as needed
  • Perform additional tasks as directed by supervisor
  • Demonstrate keyboard and computer skills for data entry
  • Utilise strong oral and written communication skills
  • Provide high standard customer experience and maintain professional appearance
  • Maintain safe, clean work environment and uphold best practice standards
  • Manage stock and equipment efficiently to meet customer needs
  • Follow hospital policies and procedures, including WH&S and infection control
  • Ensure patient confidentiality and customer satisfaction
  • Report incidents, accidents, and complaints for investigation
  • Manage specimen storage and movement to prevent spoilage
  • Undertake administration and maintenance tasks as required 

About you

The ideal candidate will have a background in customer service and experience in pathology laboratory specimen handling.

  • Certificate III or IV in Laboratory or Pathology, highly desirable
  • Knowledge and experience in laboratory procedures and processes
  • Perform specimen dissection and processing as required
  • Respond to telephone inquiries and provide authorised results
  • Package and dispatch specimens for transport to external laboratories
  • Handle troubleshooting of specimens that do not meet requirements
  • Assist with stock control and pre-analytical processing of specimens
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for liaising with colleagues and supervisors
