About the role

Mater Pathology’s Haematology Division is seeking two dedicated and skilled Scientists to deliver high‑quality, cost‑effective diagnostic services for clinicians and their patients. Working as part of a supportive and collaborative team, you will contribute to daily laboratory operations and be required to work independently while participating in a rotating 24/7 shift roster.

We currently have two opportunities available:

  • Permanent Full‑Time Scientist – 38 hours per week
  • 12‑Month Maximum‑Term Contract – 36 hours per week

Both positions are based in our South Brisbane laboratories and are available for an immediate start.

This role requires strong scientific knowledge, technical capability, and demonstrated experience in both routine and complex Haematology workflows.You will utilise contemporary technology, uphold best‑practice standards, and support the broader operational direction of the Haematology Laboratory to deliver accurate, timely and clinically meaningful diagnostic outcomes.

Salary range: $39.86 - $58.59 (HP3) plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900  + access to many staff benefits! 

What you'll be doing

In this role, you will be responsible for delivering high‑quality clinical, operational, financial, and safety outcomes across the Haematology service.
  • Produce reliable, complete, and accurate diagnostic reports.
  • Demonstrate appropriate judgement regarding the significance of results, including authorisation and critical result notification according to Mater Pathology protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with the Clinical Governance Framework and accreditation requirements.
  • Monitor turnaround times and follow up overdue or referred results.
  • Provide high‑level problem‑solving and decision‑making using sound scientific and professional judgement.
  • Contribute to clinical trials and research activities relevant to Haematology 
  • Contribute to resource stewardship by reducing waste and identifying cost‑saving opportunities.
  • Apply thorough knowledge of quality assurance requirements including TGA, NPAAC, and NATA standards.

About you

  • Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Science), Bachelor of Science majoring in a relevant specialty area, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Current/previous Haematology and morphology experience is a prerequisite.  
  • Relevant professional memberships and/or fellowships within Haematology or related specialty areas.
  • Demonstrated high‑level clinical knowledge and technical skills supported by relevant qualifications and experience.
  • Ability to prioritise workflow and manage daily operational duties.
  • Provide supervision and support to junior staff, pre‑graduate scientists and students.
  • Contribute to service improvement activities and laboratory meetings.
  • Apply sound professional judgement in laboratory automation, computerisation, and method validation.
  • Ensure completeness and reliability of results and reports.
  • Perform duties relevant to your rostered work area as outlined in the duty statement.
