Mater Hospital Springfield is seeking applications for Ward Services Team Leader to join us in a permanent, full-time role. Based at our Springfield campus, these roles will be part of a landmark moment in Queensland healthcare at Mater Hospital Springfield — opening early 2026. This state of the art facility will meet the needs of the growing Greater Springfield region. With a mix of public and private beds across ICU, maternity, emergency and medical, surgical services, it’s set to care for over 200,000 patients annually.

Salary range: $49.07 - $51.73 per hour plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900  + access to many staff benefits! 

What you’ll be doing

As the Ward Services Team Leader at Mater Hospital Springfield, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing and coordinating the ward services team to ensure the delivery of efficient, high-quality support services that enhance patient care and ward operations. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and supervising the ward services team, including orderlies and support staff, to ensure timely and safe patient transport, equipment availability, and maintenance of a clean and safe ward environment.
  • Responsible for managing Mortuary, and the Central Clinical Equipment Loan Store, as well as Holy Cross services cleaning and linen contracts and hospitality external grounds.
  • Coordinating daily workload allocation, monitoring staff performance, and providing guidance and support to foster a motivated, cohesive team.
  • Acting as a key liaison between nursing, medical, allied health staff, and ward services to facilitate smooth patient flow and operational efficiency.
  • Ensuring adherence to hospital policies, infection control standards, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance within the ward services function.
  • Managing resources effectively, including equipment and supplies, to optimise utilisation and minimise waste or delays.
  • Identifying opportunities for process improvements and leading initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient experience.
  • Responding promptly to ward needs and escalations, troubleshooting issues and escalating complex concerns appropriately.
  • Supporting the professional development of team members through coaching, mentoring, and facilitating ongoing training.
  • Maintaining accurate records and reporting on ward services activities, incidents, and outcomes to support operational transparency and continuous improvement.
  • Promoting a patient-centred approach by ensuring all team members uphold the dignity, comfort, and safety of patients at all times.

About you

You are a motivated and experienced leader with a strong commitment to supporting clinical teams and enhancing patient care through effective ward services management.

You bring:

  • Proven experience in a healthcare support role, ideally within a hospital setting, with a thorough understanding of ward operations and patient transport logistics.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, with the ability to supervise, motivate, and develop a diverse team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of building strong collaborative relationships with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders.
  • Strong organisational and problem-solving abilities with a keen eye for detail and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues.
  • A sound knowledge of infection control practices, safety guidelines, and regulatory compliance requirements relevant to ward services.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining a patient-centred focus and commitment to quality care.
  • Physical stamina and practical knowledge of safe patient handling and manual tasks, ensuring safety for both patients and staff.
  • Flexibility and resilience to adapt to changing ward demands and contribute positively to a supportive workplace culture aligned with Mater’s values.
