About the Role

Mater Private Hospital Townsville is seeking an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison Officer to provide culturally safe, practical support and advocacy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families/carers while they are receiving care within our hospital.This is a permanent part‑time position, working 16 hours per week across two days, with flexibility to agree on days that best suit the successful applicant.

This role is essential in facilitating effective communication between patients, families/carers, and health care professionals to ensure care is delivered in a culturally safe, sensitive, and appropriate manner. The Liaison Officer plays a key role in supporting patients to successfully navigate their health care journey and achieve improved health outcomes. This is an Indigenous Identified position. Under section 25 of the Anti‑Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld), it is a genuine occupational requirement that the successful applicant be an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.

Salary range: $46.96 - $51.73 per hour plus superannuation andaccess to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900  +access to many staff benefits! 

What You’ll Be Doing

In this role, you will:

  • Provide culturally appropriate practical assistance, advocacy, problem‑solving, and referrals for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families/carers.
  • Assess patient and family needs and deliver culturally informed interventions to support safe, effective care.
  • Act as a cultural liaison between patients, families/carers, and multidisciplinary health care teams.
  • Educate and support hospital staff to better understand culturally specific needs and improve communication and rapport with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.
  • Provide cultural advice and support within multidisciplinary teams to enhance patient care and service delivery.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in patient clinical records.
  • Identify opportunities for service improvement and provide recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Maintain strong links with community organisations, health workers, accommodation services, and support networks.
  • Participate in Liaison Service activities including staff meetings, in‑service education, data collection, and reporting.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, accreditation processes, and hospital committees as required.
  • Model professional conduct, hospital values, and best practice at all times.

About You

You are a committed and culturally knowledgeable professional who is passionate about improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You bring strong communication skills, cultural understanding, and the ability to work collaboratively within a hospital environment.

  • This role is Indigenous Identified. Applicants must be an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, confirmed via written assertion or appropriate documentation.
  • Current Class C driver’s licence (required prior to commencement).
  • Ability to travel between Mater Private Hospital Townsville sites.
  • Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities in a hospital liaison role or within the broader health or social services sector (government or non‑government).
  • Completion of, or progress toward, qualifications in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care.
