About the role

Mater Private Hospital is seeking an experienced Nurse Unit Manager (NUM) to lead the Gynaecology, Urology, and Plastics Surgical Unit in a full-time, 12-month maximum term role from June 2026 – July 2027.

The Nurse Unit Manager (NUM) is a Registered Nurse who carries overall responsibility for the organisation and management of the clinical unit. By providing a clear focus for clinical and operational leadership, the NUM facilitates provision of a high standard of holistic patient/client centred care, to maximise effective management of clinical, financial and human resources within a quality and risk management framework.

Nurse Unit Managers (NUMs) as Registered Nurses at Mater Health Services practice within the relevant Standards for Nurses as per the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and other legislation, standards and codes that can impact or inform the evidence based practice of Nursing and are accountable for their own practice.

Salary range: $76.80 per hour plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900  + access to many staff benefits! 

What you’ll be doing

Your responsibilities will include (but are not limited to): 

  • Management of our Gynaecology, Urology and Plastics Surgical unit in partnership with our medical, nursing and administrative teams
  • Identifying and implementing opportunities for clinical service development and improvement in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Clinical Services – Mater Private
  • Developing, improving and monitoring systems and processes to ensure service is managed effectively and efficiently
  • Professional line management of the nursing team
  • Achieve optimal patient outcomes throughout the patient journey and continuum of care across Mater Health
  • Maintain current knowledge and skills to ensure continued professional growth
  • Leading by example to provide high level clinical care for our patients
  • Utilising expert level communication strategies to guide the team in achieving the unit’s goals

This specialist team will see you managing an established team with a great mix of new graduates and highly experienced nursing staff, so you will need the ability to work with a diverse range of people in a range of specialties.

About you

Your highly developed clinical and management leadership skills will see you leading the team, and your drive and innovative approach will see you further developing the modes of care to improve the experience and outcomes for patients.

To be considered for the role you must have:

  • Extensive post-graduate specialty nursing experience, preferably minimum 5 years
  • Current AHPRA nursing registration
  • Solid understanding of private health care
  • Proven use of exceptional communication skill to motivate and lead a team to achieve goals
  • Strong change management skills and influencing/negotiating experience
  • Excellent time management skills
  • The ability to effectively manage a clinical cost centre

Post graduate clinical or management qualifications will also be very highly regarded
