About the role

The Orthopaedic Short Stay Coordinator is accountable for implementing and coordinating the orthopaedic short stay project titled Mater Accelerated Joint Replacement Program (MAJR). A key responsibility is ensuring a seamless delivery of care for patients undergoing short stay (up to 2 -3 nights) total knee (TKR) or total hip (THR) replacement by coordinating patient care across the surgical journey – before, during and after.

This role will be offered on a maximum term 12 month contract, working 24 hours per week.

Salary range: $56.08 - $60.05 per hour plus superannuation andaccess to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900  +access to many staff benefits! 

What you’ll be doing

  • Ensure patients are clinically appropriate for the short stay pathway through assessment and risk stratification
  • Coordinate and facilitate multidisciplinary pre-operative assessment and optimisation
  • Develop and oversee personalised care plans aligned to VMO protocols and patient needs
  • Contribute to reduced cost of care through decreased LOS and improved bed utilisation
  • Support increased throughput of elective arthroplasty cases
  • Minimise avoidable costs such as readmissions, cancellations, and delays
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, clinical governance standards, and accreditation requirements
  • Maintain adherence to infection control, WHS, and patient safety protocols
  • Identify, escalate, and mitigate clinical and operational risks
  • Act as a clinical and operational leader for the short stay program
  • Accountable for program implementation, performance, and outcomes

About you

  • Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse
  • Demonstrated experience in orthopaedics, perioperative services, or surgical nursing/allied health
  • Experience in coordinating patient care across the continuum (pre-admission to post-discharge)
  • Experience implementing or working within a short stay arthroplasty or enhanced recovery program
  • Experience in program coordination, project management, or clinical leadership roles.
  • Experience in data collection, analysis, and performance reporting
  • Excellent care coordination and case management capability across the patient journey
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with patients, VMOs, GPs, and multidisciplinary teams
