About the role

Mater Hospital Brisbane Perioperative Unit is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Registered Nurse Scrub / Scout to work within the theatres as part of Mater’s Theatre Novice Program.

The Transition to Perioperative Nursing Program is designed for experienced Registered Nurses seeking to transition into the specialty of Perioperative Nursing. The program provides a structured, supported pathway into Scrub/Scout, Anaesthetics or Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU practice for clinicians with an established background in acute patient care.

The program is specifically designed for Registered Nurses who possess a minimum of one-year post-registration clinical experience within a critical care environment, Day Surgery, procedural areas or other relevant acute care specialties and wish to develop the specialist knowledge and technical skills required for contemporary perioperative practice.

Participants will undertake a comprehensive orientation and education program incorporating theoretical learning, clinical facilitation, competency-based assessments, simulation, study days, supervised clinical practice and ongoing professional support. The program aims to develop safe, confident and competent perioperative nurses capable of providing evidence-based, patient-centred care across the perioperative continuum.

The Perioperative Unit specialises in general, gynaecology, robotics, plastics, urology, vascular, orthopaedics, Obstetrics & Ophthalmology. As a highly valued member of the team, you will be part of a group of professionals who take pride in providing the highest levels of patient care.

This role will be offered on a permanent full-time basis. The successful candidates will be required to work across a 7-day rotating roster including, early and late shifts, night shifts, and on call.

Salary range: $44.06 - $56.52 per hour plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900 + access to many staff benefits! 

What you’ll be doing

The Transition Registered Nurse will:

• Deliver safe, evidence-based nursing care under the guidance of experienced perioperative clinicians
• Participate in structured orientation across allocated specialty areas
• Develop knowledge and competence in perioperative patient assessment, preparation, intraoperative care and postoperative recovery
• Progressively demonstrate competence in specialty-specific technical skills
• Maintain patient safety through adherence to clinical standards, policies and infection prevention principles
• Demonstrate effective clinical reasoning and appropriate escalation of patient deterioration
• Practise within individual scope of practice while recognising personal limitations and seeking assistance appropriately
• Participate in competency assessments and clinical performance reviews throughout the program
• Contribute positively to multidisciplinary team function
• Demonstrate increasing independence throughout the program while maintaining patient safety

Education and Professional Development:

• Attend all mandatory study days, education sessions and simulation activities
• Complete all required learning packages, competency assessments and clinical portfolios within prescribed timeframes
• Participate actively in clinical coaching, mentoring and feedback opportunities
• Demonstrate reflective practice and incorporate feedback into clinical performance
• Maintain responsibility for ongoing professional development and lifelong learning

About you

• At least 12 months experience within a hospital setting
• Desire to build a career within theatres
• Current AHPRA nursing registration as a Registered Nurse (no restrictions)
• Ability to work in an ever-changing and fast paced environment
• A strong work ethic, positive attitude and willingness to role model and promote the Mater values
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to liaise with a variety of different stakeholders both internally and externally at various levels
• Demonstrated ability to operate both in a team environment and autonomously using initiative, sound reasoning and strong listening, negotiation and decision-making skills
• Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
• Commitment to ensuring the levels of service is always delivered to patients at all times
