About the role

Mater Health is seeking applications for a Hospital Operations Manager to join Mater Hospital Brisbane in this permanent, full-time position will be based at our South Brisbane campus.

The Hospital Operations Manager provides strategic and operational leadership for multiple critical functions essential to the daily operations of Mater Hospital Brisbane (MHB). This role oversees the Central Staffing Office (CSO), Ward Services and the Rostering Team. Additionally, it manages the morgue and acts as the liaison with contracted cleaning and laundry service providers.

This role is responsible for strategically delivering a fit-for-purpose CSO that meets the current and future nursing workforce requirements of MHB. It will integrate several hospital operations functions, including ward services, linen, and cleaning, to ensure the delivery of high-quality, efficient support services aligned with business needs.

What you’ll be doing

As a key member of the broader MHB leadership team, the Hospital Operations Manager carries significant financial and human resource management responsibilities. The role includes direct reports and requires building strong collaborative partnerships with managers across the organisation. The position is also part of the executive on-call roster and actively participates in MHB’s performance and accountability framework.

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for Central Staffing Office, Ward Services, Rostering, morgue, and contracted support services to ensure efficient hospital operations.
  • Collaborate with clinical and operational leaders to align workforce planning with patient care needs and service demands.
  • Lead workforce rostering and deployment to support safe, high-quality, and continuous patient care.
  • Monitor staffing levels, workforce data, and trends to identify risks and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Manage financial and human resources to meet budget and service delivery targets while optimising resource utilisation.
  • Foster a collaborative and positive workplace culture that promotes teamwork, staff engagement, and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee compliance with safety, quality, and accreditation standards, driving initiatives to enhance patient safety and service quality.
  • Support professional development through coaching, mentoring, and education programs for team members.
  • Participate in the Executive on-call roster and contribute to leadership, performance, and accountability frameworks.
  • Manage relationships with external contractors to ensure service delivery meets agreed standards and KPIs.

About you

You are a highly skilled nursing professional with strong leadership experience and a solid understanding of hospital operations, committed to delivering safe, efficient, and patient-centred care.

  • Current registration with APHRA (with no restrictions)
  • Tertiary qualification in specialty nursing, health administration, management, clinical leadership, or finance (or actively working towards).
  • Minimum of five years full-time experience in a clinical specialty, including clinical nursing and leadership roles.
  • Proven experience managing and leading large, multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong knowledge of hospital operations, including patient flow and emergency response coordination.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead workforce planning, rostering, and resource management effectively.
  • Skilled in financial management, including budgeting and cost optimisation.
  • Commitment to fostering a positive, collaborative workplace culture focused on continuous improvement.
  • Ability to drive compliance with safety, quality, and accreditation standards while promoting patient-centred care.
