About the role

Join Mater Mothers’ Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU) as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner and play a key clinical and leadership role in the care of sick and preterm newborns.

Based within Mater Mothers’ public and private hospitals, our NCCU is a highly specialised tertiary referral service supporting babies requiring complex neonatal, cardiac and surgical care across Southeast and Central Queensland and Northern New South Wales. The service includes 47 intensive care cots and 32 special care cots, alongside specialist services including the Mater Babies’ Clinic, Growth and Development Clinic, Maternal fetal medicine service and retinopathy of prematurity service.

As a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, you will provide advanced and extended nursing practice within neonatology, exercising independent clinical judgement to assess, investigate, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate patient care. Working closely with specialist neonatologists and the broader multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to clinical leadership, education, research, quality improvement and clinical governance.

This is a permanent, full time opportunity, based on our South Brisbane Campus. 

Salary range: $79.47- $81.45 per hour plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900  + access to many staff benefits! 

What you’ll be doing

• Provide advanced, evidence-based neonatal care, working autonomously and in partnership with neonatologists and the multidisciplinary team.
• Conduct comprehensive neonatal assessments and contribute to clinical decision-making, including managing investigations, treatment plans and discharge processes.
• Participate in ward rounds, high-risk deliveries and neonatal emergencies, providing expert clinical input when it matters most.
• Support the supervision and development of registrars, residents and training Nurse Practitioners.
• Provide clinical education, teaching and mentoring to nursing and medical staff across the NCCU.
• Work collaboratively with allied health, surgical and external teams, including Queensland Children’s Hospital, to support continuity and coordination of care.
• Contribute to clinical governance, quality improvement, research and the development and implementation of evidence-based policies, guidelines and models of care.
• Provide professional and clinical leadership, promoting the Nurse Practitioner role and contributing to nursing leadership forums across NCCU and Mater Mothers’ Hospital.
• Support team development through coaching, mentoring and succession planning while maintaining a visible presence within the clinical environment.
• Champion safe, compassionate and patient- and family-centred care, using advanced clinical judgement and contemporary evidence to achieve the best possible outcomes.

About you

You are an experienced neonatal clinician and Nurse Practitioner who brings advanced clinical knowledge, sound judgement and a commitment to education, collaboration and continuous improvement.

Essential:

• Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
• Current endorsement with AHPRA as a Nurse Practitioner.
• Minimum five years’ experience in the relevant clinical specialty.
• Demonstrated ability to provide advanced clinical care and work autonomously within a complex neonatal environment.
• Commitment to evidence-based practice, clinical governance, quality improvement and professional development.

Desirable:

• Experience in clinical leadership.
• High-level interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
• Experience in education, mentoring, research or quality improvement within a neonatal or critical care setting.
