Mater is looking for an experienced Senior Advisor, Media to join our Corporate Affairs and Growth team on a fixed-term basis (until late June 2027), providing maternity leave cover at an exciting time for the organisation.

As our services and presence continue to grow, including across Gold Coast and Springfield communities, we are looking for someone who can connect Mater’s strategic priorities and growth areas with great storytelling.

You’ll work across the organisation to proactively uncover stories involving our patients, clinicians, researchers and services, turning them into compelling media opportunities that strengthen Mater’s reputation, demonstrate our impact and support the organisation’s strategic priorities.

Salary range: commensurate with experience plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900  + access to many staff benefits!  

What you’ll be doing 

Working with the Director, Communications and Media and the broader Corporate Affairs and Growth team, you will:

• Proactively identify patient and clinician stories with strong media potential
• Develop stories that bring Mater’s strategic priorities, growth areas and clinical expertise to life
• Build a strong pipeline of proactive media opportunities across Mater’s hospitals, services and communities
• Develop and pitch stories across television, radio, print, online and specialist media
• Write compelling media releases, pitches, statements, talking points and briefing materials
• Build relationships with clinicians, researchers and leaders to uncover stories before they become obvious media opportunities
• Support storytelling around new and growing services, clinical innovation and areas of strategic importance to Mater
• Coordinate media interviews, filming, photography and media visits
• Build productive relationships with journalists, producers and editors
• Respond quickly and professionally to media enquiries
• Brief and prepare Mater spokespeople for interviews
• Support Mater’s response to emerging issues and reputational matters
• Work with digital, social and internal communications colleagues to amplify strong stories across Mater-owned channels
• Monitor coverage and contribute to reporting on media performance

About you

You’ll be an experienced media, journalism or communications professional who knows what makes a good story and, importantly, knows how to find one.

You’ll bring:

• Strong news judgement and a proactive approach to storytelling
• Excellent writing and editing skills
• Good knowledge of the Queensland media landscape
• Established relationships with journalists and media outlets
• Experience pitching proactive stories and managing reactive media enquiries
• An ability to understand organisational priorities and translate them into strong external narratives
• Confidence working with senior leaders, clinicians, researchers and subject-matter experts
• Strong judgement when dealing with sensitive or reputational matters
• The ability to work quickly and calmly when priorities change
• Experience in healthcare or another complex environment would be highly regarded.
