Mater Health is looking for a Clinical Coding Services Team leader to join the team. Based at our South Brisbane campus, this permanent, full-time role will be reporting to the Clinical Coding Services Manager.

The Clinical Coding Services Team Leader works with a large team of coders in Mater hospitals. The role requires supporting and leading a large team, to ensure there is an understanding and accurate implementation of the Australian Coding Standards and changes as they occur. They ensure monthly coding deadlines can be routinely met. The position which is based in Brisbane supports management, research and audit activities, includes some routine reporting requirements, raises concerns about clinical documentation where these arise, to code cases more accurately. 

Salary range: $114,746 - $122,915 per annum plus 11.5% superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900  + access to many staff benefits! 

What you’ll be doing

You will manage the coding team to meet the monthly reporting requirements for the Mater facilities.

  • Provide leadership to a large, well-functioning team, to meet Key Performance Indicators
  • Ensure that team members have access to current and appropriate resources and ensure participation in wider education activities as these become available.
  • Provide expert advice to Clinical Documentation Specialists/Revenue Assurance Team within the relevant field.
  • Provide expert advice to the state-wide clinical coding services manager and support research and audit activities.
  • Interpret PICQ Performance Indicators for Coding Quality audit reports.
  • Provide expert advice to Quality and Risk Managers in reviewing Hospital Acquired Complication reports, and Clinical Indicators for ACHS and Private Health Unit and other data queries.
  • Manage the assignment of accurate and timely clinical codes to patient episodes of care through analysis of clinical documentation using the appropriate version of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Australian Modification (ICD-10-AM) applying Australian Coding Standards and relevant State Coding Authority advice.
  • Lead and participate in meetings and other forums as required.
  • Act as a representative of Mater at internal interdepartmental meetings and external industry forums.
  • Lead and instigate quality activities.

  • Hybrid work environment, required on-site in South Brisbane, at least two days a week

About you

You will hold a Bachelor of Health Information Management or Clinical Coding Qualification and meet the below criteria:

  • Demonstrated experience in the leadership and development of a team
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing) to a diverse range of stakeholders
  • At least 4 years’ experience in Clinical Coding using current edition of ICD 10 AM and ACHI and sound knowledge of Australian Coding standards and AR-DRGs
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of current privacy and medico-legal legislation and standards with capacity to provide operational and strategic advice to hospital staff
  • Eligible for Health Information Management Association of Australia Membership
  • Experience in coding audits, training of staff and the facilitation of coding education programs
  • Experience using 3M Codefinder software (Desirable)
