About the role

Mater Health is looking for a Peer Support Worker to join the Catherine's House Team. This permanent, part-time role (22.8 hours per week) is based at our South Brisbane campus.

Catherine’s House for Mother’s, Babies and Families (CHMBF) is a world-class, perinatal and infant mental health service. The integrated model of care provides inpatient and community services to public and private consumers. 

These services include a 10-bed inpatient mother-baby unit, private day program, and other outpatient services. The Perinatal Mental Health Peer Worker will be responsible for providing peer support to the services within Catherine’s House and Mater’s broader mental health services.

Salary range: $38.81 - $43.16 per hour plus 11.5% superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900  + access to many staff benefits! 

What you’ll be doing

We require a Perinatal Mental Health (PMH) Peer Worker with lived experience of mental health challenge(s) in the perinatal period, and includes a story of hope, re(dis)covery, and resilience.  Alternatively, we welcome applications from partners or support people that have a lived experience of caring for someone with someone with a lived experience of perinatal mental health challenges and recovery.  You will empower parents in their recovery journey through perinatal mental health challenges. You will also model a high level of self-awareness and commitment to self-care. 

About you

Essential

  • Lived experience of perinatal mental health challenges, accompanied by experiences of personal recovery, and demonstrating stories of hope and resiliency. OR lived experience as a partner of a person who experienced perinatal mental health challenges.
  • Capacity to relate to others from a perspective of shared experiences, and to assist a diverse range of people by listening effectively, modelling skills, confidence, and strategies in a manner both helpful and respectful to participants.
  • Ability to model a high level of self-awareness and commitment to self-care.
  • Perinatal Mental Health Peer Workers must have a current Working with Children Check (Blue card) and be up to date with vaccinations.
  • .6 FTE - There is a requirement that the applicant will be available for a half day Saturday with the remaining hours/days to be negotiated with the Team Leader.

Desirable

  • Cert IV in Peer Support Mental Health or willingness to work towards this qualification.
  • Previous experience working in a peer support role, public mental health service or NGO sector.
  • Awareness of Trauma-Informed Care and Recovery-Oriented Practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Lived experience of accessing mental health services (public or private) in Queensland.
  • Actively participate in professional supervision, annual performance appraisal and development processes.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy.
