About the role

Mater Health is seeking a Statewide Infection Control Practitioner, to join the team on a full-time basis, based at our South Brisbane campus.

The Statewide Infection Control Practitioner (ICP) is a senior health professional responsible for providing expert clinical leadership, consultancy, and strategic direction in infection prevention and control (IPC) across Mater Health Services within the state.

The role will lead, manage and provide a proactive strategic infection prevention and control service ensuring that Mater Hospitals continually improves performance in reducing healthcare-associated infections by developing systems that are evidence-based and grounded in best practice. This position has a broad remit across clinical practice, education, and research, and is critical in supporting a coordinated, evidence-based approach to IPC in line with national standards, public health directives, and organisational goals.

What you’ll be doing

• Provide expert infection prevention and control (IPC) consultancy, offering specialist clinical advice and guidance to departments across Mater Hospitals to support safe, evidence-based practice.
•  Lead implementation of best-practice IPC strategies and policies, ensuring consistent, high-quality infection prevention measures across diverse clinical settings.
• Oversee outbreak management and surveillance activities, including interpreting epidemiological data and escalating emerging risks at local and statewide levels.
• Ensure timely and accurate reporting of notifiable diseases to Public Health in alignment with legislation, guidelines, and organisational protocols.
• Embed IPC principles into capital projects and infrastructure development, advising on design, commissioning, and construction to minimise infection transmission risks.
• Coordinate statewide application of IPC protocols, collaborating with governance teams to ensure aligned operational delivery and integration of infection prevention strategies.
• Lead reviews of IPC-related incidents, contributing to root cause analyses and driving system-level improvements to prevent recurrence.
• Support cost-effective IPC decision-making, including advising on product evaluation, equipment purchasing, and strategies that reduce infection-related readmissions and adverse events.
• Ensure organisational compliance with regulatory standards, maintaining the IPC risk register and supporting accreditation requirements under NSQHS Standard 3.
• Provide interprofessional leadership and performance oversight, mentoring IPC practitioners, facilitating communities of practice, and monitoring/reporting key IPC performance indicators to executives

About you

• Tertiary qualification in nursing, public health, microbiology, or a related allied health profession.
• Postgraduate qualification in Infection Prevention and Control or equivalent (or significant progress toward completion).
• Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) or relevant professional body, where applicable.
• Minimum 7 years’ experience in a senior infection prevention and control role.
• Current C Class Queensland driver’s licence (or ability to obtain one) and willingness to travel as required.
• Participation in on-call or after-hours response arrangements may be required.
• Expert knowledge of infection prevention and control principles, legislation, and national standards (especially NSQHS Standard 3).
• Expertise and leadership in infection prevention and control across clinical, education, and research domains.
• Experience providing specialist advice in a complex health environment with multiple stakeholders.
• Proven ability to lead or contribute to policy development, clinical guideline implementation, and outbreak response.
• Advanced communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to build productive relationships with clinicians, executives, academics, and policymakers.
• Strong research and analytical abilities, including the ability to interpret epidemiological data and apply evidence to clinical and policy decisions.
• Commitment to innovation and continuous improvement in the design and evaluation of IPC programs.
